“I am interested in the consequences of human actions on the environment and advocating for the importance of the perception and awareness of these effects. In my practice I examine the notion of fragility and vulnerability of threatened habitats as well as other environment-related issues. The Time That Remains observes drastic environmental changes and loss of endemic species in Hawaiʻi and globally. It also conveys personal loss.

Ruminating through the Earth’s undoing, I set on my worktable a stack of gifted boxes of photo papers. Inside: white rectangular nothingness mirroring a void within. I documented daily sentiment in repetitive images. Each print differs slightly from each other, yet undeniably reveals the same source. Void took shape, grief found color.”

Bruna Stude is a self-taught artist whose work explores the ecological preservation of her surroundings. Stude grew up on the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia. At the age of ten, she received her first camera: a 35mm. Though drawn to photography at a young age, she did not pursue it until later, having spent her life sailing and exploring the oceans, documenting marine life.

Stude develops photographs in an indoor-outdoor studio on Kauaʻi. The porous structure of her workspace allows a blurring of darkroom and nature, allowing Stude to bring the environment into her studio, while she develops prints. She works exhaustively, creating hundreds of repetitive prints developed through various traditional practices and experimental printing methods. Her sources of light range  from the sun to her iPhone flashlight. Developed images are rinsed in the rain allowing nature to become part of her art.

She has exhibited in Hawai‘i, US, and internationally.
