Through powerful portraits and incredible surf scenes, Brown W. Cannon III chronicles the lives of surfers--and the community around them--along the North Shore of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i. This photograph documents professional surfer Emily "Emi" Erickson, also known as the unofficial queen of Waimea Bay, and is published on the occasion of NORTH by Damiani Books (2023). Cannon's large format photography publication includes stories told by surfers and captures an incredibly unique window of time in Hawaiian surfing history along the Seven Mile Miracle (aka the North Shore) at a time when surfing’s rich history is tangible. In addition to Cannon's decades-long passion for surfing and photography, NORTH is inspired by his family roots, which have made Hawai‘i home since the 1920’s.

Brown W. Cannon III began his photographic journey in his parents’ darkroom over 40 years ago. He studied photography at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena California and has traveled the world photographing award-winning stories for editorial and commercial clients, including Travel & Leisure, Conde Nast, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, GEO Saison and Copalli Rum. His photography has been exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries and museums throughout the U.S and held in numerous private collections. He is passionate about photographing culture, adventure, and conservation. In 2018, he founded no2plastic.org , a nonprofit dedicated to reducing single-use plastics.

When asked, “Where is the one place on Earth that resonates most for you?” he answers unequivocally, “the Seven-Mile Miracle known as the North Shore of O‘ahu.”
