Self Portrait
2022 / 2023
Custom hand-painted black mirror + clear mirror in circular steel frame
39 in diameter

Self Portrait invites reflection and connection with the self, others, space, and time. The custom-made artwork is personalized to show the stars of the night’s sky as they appeared at the exact time and place of one’s birth. When gazing into Self Portrait, one sees oneself reflected in the stars, in the dark and the light, and in the space of the heavens that both surrounds us and is within us. The mirror also reflects and connects the gazer with birth (and therefore one’s own birth), connecting the space and time of the past to the space and time of this very moment, born brand new in the here and now.

This work is an opportunity to receive a custom-made, personalized self-portrait; Each piece is individually hand-painted black + clear mirror in a circular steel frame, and will be customized based on the collector’s chosen birth time + place.

Andrew Binkley is an interdisciplinary artist whose work reflects on the stages we go through toward awakening and letting go. He has since exhibited internationally with the Mori Art Museum (Tokyo), the Downtown Film Festival (Los Angeles), the Queens Museum of Art (New York), Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art (China), The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (Taiwan), and Honolulu Biennial (Hawaiʻi). He has exhibited site-specific public works in an ancient English castle, a Polish WWII air-raid shelter, a Tokyo subway station, the cracked grounds of the former Spalding House Museum, as well as a mountain in the high-desert of Joshua Tree National Park, and the streets of Seattle with 4Culture + the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He was the recipient of the 2009 Cynthia Eyre Award, nominated by Laura Hoptman, senior curator of the New Museum, New York, and the 2010 Best of Show award by Carol McCusker PhD, curator of Photography at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego. Binkley’s works may be found within the collections of Shanghai Zendai MoMA, the Buhl Collection, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

“Art can be a path of reflection and connection to oneself and the world around us. Since its inception, Hawaiʻi Contemporary has made a tremendous effort to reflect the artists of the Pacific and to connect them and the world at large to this incredibly special place, Hawaiʻi.”
