Inspired by a free-diving experience at the sacred Hōnaunau Bay in South Kona on Hawaiʻi Island, Chiho Ushio created a unique sumi ink drawing and woodcut artwork. Entitled Mauli Ola, the work received the 36th Commitment to Excellence award from the Honolulu Japanese Chamber Commerce in 2014. In a traditional style of woodblock printmaking, subsequent variations of this print are unique due to the variation of color on each woodcut layer.

Born and raised in Japan, Ushio is a Hawaiʻi-based artist and steward of forest restoration project on the Big Island. She received a BFA and MFA in printmaking from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Ushio’s work is often characterized by its serene and sublime energy that draws inspiration from experiential interactions with nature. Her experiences in Hawai‘i have yielded a holistic view of the universe in that everything nteracts with, affects, and resonates with each other: mutualistic relationships between humanity and nature, the invisible and visible, the microscopic and macroscopic.
