Jake Boggs’ work reflects the artist’s curiosities; it synthesizes past and present, and distills visual languages of arts, sciences, and humanities to articulate the surfaces of his volumetric forms. With a particular interest in the dual aesthetic and utilitarian qualities of ceramic objects throughout history, Boggs creates objects to serve as catalysts for thought. When behind the potter’s wheel, he is inescapably present, navigating streams of consciousness, probing and questioning the world, and exploring the meaning of it all. For Boggs, his ceramic practice provides personal catharsis, a means to escape into making, and a way to form physical representations of the intangible.
“When engaged in the design process, I look back across ceramic history and amalgamate aspects of objects from disparate times and places to compose a hybridity of forms. These uncanny vessels bear the accumulated information of human creativity, while the modified structures engage in contemporary visual discourses. I hope that when encountering the work, one initially feels a kinship with the familiar forms and is drawn in to further examine the complexities of each piece.”
Boggs is a Hawaiʻi-based artist, curator, and arts educator with a focus on ceramics and contemporary craft practices. He is the Ceramics Studio Coordinator at the Donkey Mill Arts Center, a nonprofit arts organization in Keauhou, Hawaiʻi. He also serves on the board of Hawaiʻi Craftsmen, a statewide crafts-centered nonprofit. Boggs holds an MFA from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (2016), and a BFA from Eastern Kentucky University (2013).

Hawaiʻi Contemporary has led the way as a creative catalyst in Hawaiʻi, engaging in contemporary discourses, and giving the arts of the Pacific a platform; I am in awe of it all. The organization is not only an entity on paper but a network of exceptional people, who have all come together to strengthen the arts community. I was fortunate enough to work on the installation team for Honolulu Biennial 2019, where I got to know the dedicated staff and artists that keep the organization alive. I have high hopes for the future of this exceptional institution.”
