Shin Ola Takahashi was born in the Miyagi prefecture of Japan. In 1971, Shin secured his first solo show in Tokyo. From there, he became captivated by Nihon-ga (Japanese-style paintings) and particularly focused on Jigoku-e (hell scenes). Shin immigrated to Hawaiʻi in 1974 to become a pupil of Jean Charlot (1898–1979), a well-known Hawai‘i mural artist. Two years later, he met poet Wayne Kaumualiʻi Westlake. Over the years, they grew a strong bond and, together, contributed original works to Seaweeds and Constructions (1976–1984) until Westlake’s death in 1984. In 2014, Shin created two paintings (one of which is presented in this lot) of visual poetry that were exhibited at the “Down on the Sidewalk in Waikiki” Westlake Art Invitational dedicated to Westlake’s legacy. Today, Shin proceeds to develop new pieces at his residence in the heart of Honolulu.
