Lawrence Seward is an artist and artworker who casually and calculatedly deploys tropical kitsch aesthetics to interrogate notions of ‘paradise.’ For Hawaiʻi Triennial 2022, he envisioned Hawaiʻi in 12 years with Seaward Sun, a free newspaper that was made available at custom stands across the south shore of Oʻahu. Dated 2034, the tabloid comprises a mix of sensational articles and images sourced from family and friends, as well as stories familiar in present-day Hawaiʻi — international luxury real estate developments built upon Hawaiian lands, military fuel leaks contaminating the water supply, and sand dredging for eroding beaches. The lead story chronicles the downfall of New Dawn Island, an imagined manmade tropical resort island, where the wealthy sought to evade the ravages of pandemics and the demands of daily life.

Lawrence Seward born and raised in Hawaiʻi, has shown his artworks internationally but mainly in New York City where he lived for seventeen years. He has been making and showing art professionally since 1990. He was represented by and exhibited at the Andrew Kreps Gallery (New York City) for 13 years. His international exhibitions include MOMA/PS1, the Aldrich Museum, Gallery Edward Mitterand, Richard Heller Gallery. Seward is in the collections of Dikeou, Emily Fischer Landau, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Dakis Joannou, and the Honolulu Museum of Art. His work has been reviewed by the New York Times, The New Yorker, Dwell Magazine, Frieze magazine, and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
