Before she became a world-famous pop artist, Yayoi Kusama (Honolulu Biennial 2019 artist) posed for photographer Tom Haar in New York in a short, butterfly-sleeved dress, woven hat, and heels. “I didn’t have to say much. She would just pose herself and create the situation for me to photograph,” Tom Haar, speaking about Kusama. [Star-Advertiser, March 12, 2017]

Haar was born in Japan of Hungarian parentage, graduating from the University of Hawaiʻi with an MFA in Visual Design. He learned his craft from his father, renowned photographer Francis Haar, and has been working as a freelance photographer since 1970. He has exhibited his work, in both black & white and color, in Budapest; New York; Honolulu; Yokohama, Japan; and Seoul. Much of his work explores the influences of both man-made and natural environments have on the places he has lived.

“I find it necessary to support the arts and, especially, Hawaiʻi Contemporary, which in recent years has been of vital importance toward the overall arts community in Hawaiʻi.”
